Collecting water

The air in Kathmandu is similar to that of New Delhi with the amount of smog and dust. I learned quickly it’s best to wear a mask when out on the streets (especially if you have bad allergies, like me… )

After the busy weekend of meetings, it was time to start the research project involving water collection. I had brought along 55 little vials with me to be filled with drinking water. I started by filling them with just a some of the bottled water I was drinking (and really hoping those would all be negative in the lab).

We had members of the GTA group collect water from different sources in their homes. We then set out on a mission over a couple days to collect water from all over Kathmandu.

There is no wasted space in Kathmandu, this may have been the smallest restaurant I’ve ever seen.

We went to a few of the areas where people collect water into large buckets and water jugs. We got in line to fill up our little vial of water…

Some of the fountains were quite beautiful.

We even made it up to a small village on the hillside.

We chatted with the young monks swimming in the water (they don’t drink the water that they swim in, FYI, they collect the water before it fills the pool).

We met a couple of locals in the area who brought us upstream to the source of the water the distributed to the entire town.

Now time to bring these vials to the lab!
