The finale of the weekend

To finish up the weekend of meetings, we started today with another CME (Continuing Medical Education) session at Model Hospital in Kathmandu. We were able to then walk around and tour the hospital. It is a very busy hospital with limited space. They are hoping to be able to expand, but being in the city that is always hard to do. But they do a good job at making use of the space they do have.

We then went along to meet and tour another hospital, Star Hospital. This is a private hospital. They have a lot of space and a very nice facility, which was built only one year ago and not 100% in use yet. Their outpatient area had a room for each specialty in one general area, it was so organized!

Our next stop was to see the Infectious Disease hospital as well as the National Public Health Laboratory. Below you can see the beds that are used for cholera… if you notice the pan in the middle of the bed, that is there for the severe diarrhea that is a hallmark of the disease. Luckily there weren’t any cases in the hospital today.

The evening and the weekend ended with the dissemination meeting. This meeting was put together in order to share the information that had been gathered over the past year on assessing the general attitude toward antibiotic stewardship in the healthcare community,  and to review the successful implementation of an antimicrobial stewardship program within two of the Kathmandu hospitals, and how we plan to move forward. It was a great meeting that was successful in getting the word out to other health care professionals and having input from those in the community of concerns and what is being done in other hospitals.

Dr. Zervos had to run to catch a flight, so I accepted a certificate in his place. I’m sure no one noticed the change..

Below we are pictured recapping the evening with the amazing group of GTA (Group for Technical Assistance). They are the group we work with while in Nepal on various projects, and the ones who organized this weekend! They are such a phenomenal team to work with.
